Biography Of Robert W. Smith - 766 Words

Robert W. Smith was born on October 24th, 1958 in Daleville, Alabama. He went to secondary school in Daleville, after which he cleared out for Troy State University, where he played lead trumpet in the Sound of the South Marching Band. Besides playing trumpet, he also studied composition during his time at TSU with Dr. Paul Yoder. Upon his graduation from TSU with a Bachelor of Music Education degree, Smith sought after his musical profession in South Florida, where he earned the Master s degree in Media Writing and Production from the University of Miami, while working with Dr. Alfred Reed. He was soon enlisted by Columbia Pictures Publications and later Warner Bros./Belwin Publications. Smith’s career with Warner Bros flourished until 2005 when the company was bought out by AMP (Alfred Music Publishing) Smith came back to Troy, Alabama in 1997 to get the Director of Bands job at Troy State University, after the retirement of this old band director, Dr. Long. Smith would end up staying at Troy for four years, working with the Sound of the South Marching Band as well as the Symphony Band. Later in 2001, Smith left Troy to try and get a more full-time job with Warner Brothers Publications. After leaving Troy, Warner Bros gave him the opportunity to travel the world, as not only as a guest conductor but also a clinician with many ensembles. Holden Caufield’s Character in Catcher in the Rye Essay The protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caufield, is best described as an anti-hero. Although his intentions are good, he lacks the heroic qualities required to realize them, and never truly resolves his problems with â€Å"phoniness,† ultimately accomplishing nothing. He distrusts 1950s American society and its people, seeing them as image-obsessed and insincere. Combined, these traits make him an archetypical anti-hero. Throughout the course of the novel, it becomes evident that Holden, embodying very few of his society’s ideals, is an anti-heroic character. At the age of sixteen, he is six foot two, awkward-looking, and has â€Å"quite a bit of grey hair† (Salinger 57). Despite this, he notes that sometimes, he acts â€Å"only about twelve† (Salinger 9). He often repeats and contradicts himself, and misuses words, implying uneasiness and immaturity. For example, he describes things as â€Å"ironical† instead of â€Å"ironic† (Salinger 9). Holden is unable to interact well with others; he fights with Stradlater, is annoyed by Ackley, and irritates most of the people he encounters. He is a chronic and unrepentant liar; upon meeting Earnest Morrow’s mother, he introduces himself as â€Å"Rudolf Schmidt† and praises her son, while remembering him as â€Å"the biggest bastard that ever went to Pencey† (Salinger 54). Holden is also physically weak. At the beginning of the novel, he picks a fight with Stradlater and loses. Afterwards, he remarks that â€Å" only been in about two fights in life, and lost both of them†, and justifies this to himself by saying â€Å"I’m a pacifist† (Salinger 45-46), thus demonstrating his hypocritical nature. Although Holden states that Stradlater’s attribution of his poor compositions to comma placement â€Å"gives a  royal pain† (Salinger 28), he blames other people for his own problems and frequently blows them out of proportion in the process. After losing fights, he pretends to be wounded; when he is punched, he thinks that he is dying, and subsequently â€Å"sort of pretending a bullet in guts† (Salinger 103-104). Holden fulfills his role as an archetypical anti-hero not only because he lacks heroic traits, but also by criticizing the society that he lives in. A major focus of the novel’s plot is the insincerity, or â€Å"phoniness† of people in 1950s America. As an anti-hero, Holden distrusts society and the people around him, condemning the hypocrisy of other characters’ interactions and the social practices of the time. He â€Å"hate the movies like poison† (Salinger 29) because of the actors, thinking that they â€Å"do something phony every minute† (Salinger 117). Similarly, when asked whether he wants to be a lawyer, he refuses, asking â€Å"How would you know you weren’t being a phony?† (Salinger 172). He criticizes the incongruity between peoples’ true desires and their public images, condemning Sally Hayes’ mother because â€Å"the only way she would go around collecting dough would be if everybody kissed her ass for her when they made a contribution.† (Salinger 114). Because of his distrust of society’s â€Å"phoniness,† Holden makes it his goal t o protect children from its onset, but finds that he cannot. Despite of his criticism of â€Å"phoniness†, Holden fails to protect the innocence of children by becoming â€Å"the catcher in the rye†. While doing so, he fantasizes about escaping â€Å"phoniness† through pretending to be a deaf-mute and isolating himself from society. However, after Phoebe tries to leave with him, he realizes that he cannot follow through with his plan. Holden eventually comes to understand that children must grow up, face danger, and make their own  decisions. His choice to think of Phoebe’s future rather than â€Å"phoniness† represents his greater realization that, in reality, the â€Å"catcher in the rye† cannot exist. Holden expresses this when he muses that â€Å"the thing with kids is you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it’s bad if you say anything† (Salinger 211). Respondents: The respondents of this research involved the selected Grade 8 students of St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City. Due to the large number of students, only 50% of the total number of respondents will be included to avoid discrepancy. Research Instrument: The researchers distributed questionnaires to each student; it includes simple yet conceptual questions. From th e third question, we can see that the reason why students registers to Facebook and Twitter is that they want to keep in touch with friends and families. It is followed by for school purposes. Seeing the fourth question, the majority of the sophomore students said that it is addicting to use Facebook and Twitter. We asked them to rate their addiction form 1 – 10 and the most number is 8 followed by 7, 9 and 10. Also, they said that sometimes, Facebook and Twitter were useful/helpful in their studying. To the last question, they answered seldom on how does Facebook help them to overcome their mental illness. Chapter 5 Summary of Findings The study utilized the survey approach of research precisely the descriptive method. The said approach is used as much as the principal rationale of the study was to figure out the problems and/or situations under such factors that mostly affect their academic performance. Students from grade 8 of St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City were asked to fill up a survey questionnaire. In order to determine the factors that affect students academic performance, the qualitative research techniques were used particularly the multiple choice questions by Ebel in 1992 and scale type by Kerlington in 1992. A survey questionnaire was prepared for students. This instrument was used to determine the problems and/or situations under such factors that mostly affect students academic performance. The questionnaire consists of 10 items as indicators. 39% of the sophomore students answered that they allotted more than 3 hours per day spending for Facebook and Twitter. 82% of them answered that they spent more than 3 hours in studying per day. 80% of the respondents believed that they find Twitter and Facebook addicting for them. As we asked them to rate their addiction from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), we got number 8 as the highest vote. As you can see the table 2 figure, numbers 1-4 got the most answer of sometimes. It means that Facebook and Twitter has a great impact on the sophomore students. Question number 5 has 40% of students who answered. Conclusions Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The majority of the student respondents spend more than 3 hours in using social networking sites. 2. Most of the student respondents spend more than 3 hours in studying. 3. The main reason of the students why they are using social networking sites is because they want to keep in touch with their friends and families. . We found out that social networking sites are very addicting. 5. Sometimes, students do experience dizziness when staying long hours using the computer 6. Only a few students choose to stay at home to open their Facebook and Twitter accounts rather than to go out with their friends. 7. Almost half of our respondents said that Facebook sometimes helps them in their studies. 8. Facebook and Twitter seldom help the students to overcome their mental illness. Recommendations On the basis of findings and conclusions taken from the study, the following recommendations are given for consideration. 1. The students should avoid spending long hours in using social networking sites and talk with their parents. 2. The parents should set their own house Internet rules and take good part on their role in their childrens school performance. 3. The teachers should maintain their good relationship with their students and guide their students in using social networking sites. 4. The school administrators should be aware of the health hazards of using social networking sites so they can well educate the students. 5. The future researchers should also use other types of survey that will make the study more comprehensive. They should also gather other information about their respondents, e. g. , gender, age, school level, and apply more questions that will make the survey more convincing and realiable.
